My colleague Claudia told me about a common saying in Brazil about the difference between empathy and sympathy. She told me that there was someone stuck in a hole, and you would get in the hole and suffer the same endeavor, that was sympathy. But, if you would throw a rope to them, staying up, not getting in the hole, that was empathy.
